About Giant Miniatures: You may think it odd - Giant Miniatures. But it is true. I started out creating paintings which were no more that 3" x 4". And since they were miniatures painted with the standards of the Royal Miniature Art Society, they were painted realistically and in detail. Miniatures are painted with several transparent glazes. They evolved from sacred illuminated manuscripts and portraits used to arrange marriages.
However through the course of time, my paintings like my girth, have been expanding. So now my art is large. So is my girth.
I still do miniatures for the annual shows. But really, this girl artist firmly believes, bigger is better. I am, of course, talking about paintings.
I still follow the miniature tradition of transparent glazes. And since the word "miniature" evolved from the word "minium" a type of red lead used in illuminated manuscripts and had nothing to do with size, it is still accurate to call my paintings "giant miniatures". Miniatures can be large.
I suspect that even the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, could be a miniature. But I didn't paint that one. I suspect you knew that.
When I paint a painting, it rarely is a case of me choosing the subject, so much as the subject choosing me. I cannot seem to just sit down and compose a painting. They tend to come to me in a flash.
I could be wandering in a store and see something out of the corner of my eye, or I could hear a sound or read a snatch of a line from a poem or story and *poof*! there is a complete image in my mind. That is my subconscious mind working hard and creating.
But then it is up to the conscious part of me to sit down and refine the image. In other words, to be accurate, I have to find examples of whatever the subject is going to be. And also, I have to decide on what sort of clothing I am going to put on the characters in the painting.
Usually the fully composed images which come into my mind are in some way, stories. Somewhere inside of me is an illustrator. I rarely can just paint for example, still life. If I were to try, I would have to have a mouse peeking around a vase or maybe tormenting the family cat.
Even when I paint a portrait, I want you to look at it and have an opinion about the person's personality or what they are thinking.
My journey into art is an incomplete journey. I will forever have new things to learn. And I know I am never going to get to the end of the journey. I will never be a perfect artist. Never will I be totally satisfied with what I create.
But, what the heck, Join me on my website, enjoy my art, kick back and make comments on the blog. Once I figure out how to use the blog, I will make comments back.
Don't let me take myself too seriously. Goodness knows, no one else does, so why should I. And why should you. Let's have fun.
